The 2019 Baku Grand Slam brought together 449 judokas from 57 countries for one of the major events on the international judo calendar. Team Daedo left its mark on the competition, with Nikoloz Sherazadishvili, María Bernabéu and Rustam Orujov each claiming bronze.

Three athletes, three podium finishes and a strong weekend for Team Daedo in Baku.

THREE ATHLETES, THREE PODIUMS

NIKO SHERAZADISHVILI · -90 KG

Competing in the -90 kg category, Niko Sherazadishvili delivered another strong performance in Baku. In the semifinal, he faced fellow world champion Nemanja Majdov in a closely contested match that extended into Golden Score.

Despite controlling much of the contest through his grip and putting his opponent under pressure with penalties, Niko was eventually denied a place in the final. He responded strongly to secure bronze, a result that kept him at the top of the world ranking.

MARÍA BERNABÉU · -70 KG

María Bernabéu added another bronze medal to Team Daedo’s tally in the women’s -70 kg category, returning to the international podium with a strong performance in Baku.

The result added another important achievement to the Spanish judoka’s international career, following her World Championship bronze in Budapest in 2017.

RUSTAM ORUJOV · -73 KG

Competing on home soil, Azerbaijan’s Rustam Orujov completed Team Daedo’s trio of podium finishes with bronze in the men’s -73 kg category.

The result rounded off a successful Grand Slam for Team Daedo, with athletes represented on the podium across three different weight categories.

A STRONG WEEKEND FOR TEAM DAEDO

Three bronze medals across three categories made Baku a memorable competition for Team Daedo. Beyond the results, each performance reflected the consistency, determination and competitive spirit required at the highest level of international judo.
